OUR HISTORY
Sutherland Little Athletics is one of the oldest, largest, and most successful Centres in NSW. For half a century members of the local Sutherland Shire community have enjoyed our great sport of athletics at Waratah Park and have represented that community both at home and on the international stage with distinction. They have done so wearing the black, white and sky-blue colours of Sutherland with pride.
Way back in 1964 at the Victorian town of Geelong the first club for children’s athletics was formed and in 1967 the Victorian Little Athletics Association commenced. Here in Sydney a group of interested local Eastern Suburbs and Botany residents also believed in the value of a sport of track and field athletics for children. The NSW State Association was formed on 8th December 1970 when clubs including Sutherland, Blacktown, Eastern Suburbs, Hornsby, and Manly Warringah in the City, along with Deniliquin and Murrumbidgee in the Country, combined to formulate a State Association.
Over the past 50 years Sutherland Little Athletics Centre has held numerous events including Centre Championships, Gala Days, Centre Relays, Multi Events and awarded athletes with medals, ribbons, and recognition patches.
On average, 460 children register each season, the lowest some 352 in 2003/04 and the highest 793 in 1972/73.
